The Great State of Maryland On June 30, 1632, the charter of Maryland had been confirmed and published, therefore it was founded. Some of the first homes the settlers built were cut wood with shingled roofs. Not very long after they started building homes out of brick, and St. Mary's City, which was Maryland's first capitol had houses and buildings of higher quality. The number of people increased rapidly over the years and in 1676 they built a statehouse.

St. Mary's City remained the capitol of Maryland until 1694, when it moved to a more convenient location. The capitol was moved to Annapolis. In 1934 the Old State House was rebuilt, many bricks from ruins of several old buildings were used in the reconstruction.
